The aim of the BHG is to promote and enhance the reputation and status of the British hat industry. It is the only trade organisation involving the hat trade. Members of the guild include manufacturers and retailers as well as individual couture milliners together with industry suppliers and associated services. All members are involved with some aspect of the British-made hat.

The Guild was originally formed in 1977 through the amalgamation of two long-standing associations; the South of England Hat manufacturer's Federation and the London based Millinery Guild. In 1982, the Guild was associated with the Chamber of Commerce for Bedfordshire and District, which had originally been set up by the hat manufacturers of Luton. In 2000 the Guild decided to handle its affairs directly and is now totally autonomous with its own office. We feel this will help us to represent the interests of members spread throughout the whole country and indeed worldwide more effectively. There can be no doubt that in all areas of the production of hats, Britain leads the world in style, manufacture and innovation. The mission of the BHG is to ensure this message is broadcast throughout the world for the benefit of all its members.
